Chapter Thirteen

Portals in Tombs

Zoe followed on Paul’s heels and Kieran came up beside her. He didn’t take her hand, but just walked next to her. Zoe was grateful for his presence and for the fact that he didn’t try to be overly protective.

She heard Jessica and Annie talking quietly behind them. Glancing back, she saw that Conor was bringing up the rear and looking all around the area. Zoe realized that she should be paying attention to their surroundings as well. When she raised her head, the amount of magical residue visible made her nauseous again.

She must have made a noise because Paul glanced back at her, and Kieran did put a hand on her arm.

“Are you okay, babe?” he asked in a quiet voice.

“Yeah, it’s just more of that red layer over everything. It’s making me sick,” Zoe told him.

Paul looked at her again. “Yeah, it’s supposed to. From what my mother told me, evil creates that sort of slimy, nauseating feel so people will be off-balance when they encounter it and somewhat weakened. You don’t exactly get used to it, but you do manage to control the reaction.”

“Do you see that a lot around here?” Kieran asked.

“Well, yeah. There’s a lot of magic and magical creatures here as you know and not all of it is nice and friendly,” Paul answered.

“You mean it’s not all leprechauns giving away gold under rainbows?” Kieran asked, raising one eyebrow.

Paul and Zoe laughed. “I just wish some of the tourists could figure that out!” Paul said.

As they approached the dolmen, Denis, lecturing to the students just ahead of them, caught Zoe’s eye and gave a small nod. He moved in front of the entrance and managed to get the students to bunch up in front, momentarily blocking other visitors from getting closer. Kieran touched Zoe’s arm and tilted his head, directing her attention to where Paul, Annie, and Conor were shuffling behind Denis and closer to the dolmen entrance. Zoe tried to look like she was just drifting around the group of students and made her way to the entrance as well. Kieran followed.

Standing in front of the dolmen, Zoe could feel magic drifting out of it. Her magesight showed her tendrils of the same nauseating green and red trailing into the darkness beyond the standing stone ‘door’. Standing next to the others, Zoe stared into the interior. Paul appeared to be concentrating on something and gave a small shake of his head.

“What?” Zoe asked in a near whisper.

“I can feel an opening in the earth beyond where the back of the tomb would be,” Paul answered quietly. “It stretches further than the archaeological evidence suggests.”

Zoe pulled on her Earth magic and, as she had recently learned how to do, supplemented its power with the other Elements. Like Paul said, she could feel a tunnel stretching out under the area of the Burren behind Poulnabrone.

“How far did the archaeologists say the tunnel extended?” she asked Paul.

“Well, it’s a burial chamber as well as a ritual site, so about, what twenty feet? I don’t remember right off the top of my head.
